An exhibition called Beatles to Bowie: The 60s Exposed opens at the Laing Art Gallery today, showing the faces of many of those responsible for creating the swinging decade.
The exhibition, organised by the National Portrait Gallery, in London, features more than 150 photographs, including many which have not been on public display before.
It promises a potent nostalgia trip for those who remember the 1960s but should also prove popular with those born since.
Many of today's pop stars cite their 1960s predecessors as influences Clip on charms - or maybe the influences of their influences.
Julie Milne, curator of the Laing Art Gallery, where the exhibition will be on until April 18, said: "This exhibition includes both classic images and previously unseen images.
"These are displayed alongside record covers, magazines and sheet music and show how photography helped to make these pop stars the icons of their time."
Among the unseen images are photographs of The Beatles taken for a magazine called Boyfriend by photographer Fiona Adams.
She also took the famous 1963 shot of the band which appeared on the cover of the Twist and Shout EP. There are the groups, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Who -and also The Shadows, including an incredibly youthful Hank Marvin with a sprinkling of teenage spots on his chin.
Fendi Replica HandbagsThen there are the solo performers - early portraits of Cliff Richard, Billy Fury, Marianne Faithfull, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie, who is probably more closely associated with the 1970s than the decade prior to it.
The exhibition is arranged chronologically, which is interesting. It is easy to refer simply to the 1960s but here you will see that between paper bag printing 1961 and 1969 there was a clear progression, or at least a lot of changes.
It is an exhibition as much about fashion as about music.
Young viewers might learn that old lesson - that what goes around, comes around.
Admission to the exhibition is free and the gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm; Sunday, 2-5pm.
