Wilson aims to make Mark in de

BULLISH Blaydon back-rower Mark Wilson believes the Swalwell men must produce 80 power-packed minutes to dispatch Tynedale at Crow Trees t o d ay.

The North East's top rugby derby takes place this afternoon (kick- off 2pm) after Tynedale had three stars in England Counties action on Friday night against Irish Clubs at Stourbridge. replica breitling watches

Falcons and Northumbria University man Wilson turned out for England Students alongside Blaydon clubmate Andrew Archibald on Friday night too, with that pair joining Tynedale's Counties trio Johnny Williams, Joe Graham and Jack Harrison on the doubtful list.

All five players from both teams have been given as long as possible to recover from their respective Friday night exploits, but Blaydon boss Tom Rock and Tynedale head coach Tom Borthwick both want their stars in National One action t o d ay.

The keenly-anticipated grudge match takes on extra spice after Blaydon humbled Tynedale 28-22 in Corbridge back in October - the final score might have been close, but the visitors had the game in the bag after an hour. Despite the result Wilson's men still slipped off the pace towards the death, and the former Kendal 20-year-old admitted his men must sustain their high-tempo gameplan for the whole contest if they are to secure a bragging rights-hogging double over their fierce local rivals.

Rugby director Rock has assembled a dangerous squad and at times this season Blaydon have offered eye-catching and deadly performances, but replica hublot watches Wilson admitted there has also been too much inconsistency.

He said: "There have been games where we have been winning after an hour and then we have just taken our foot off the gas. "When we played top teams like Esher and Cambridge we were the better side, so it is slightly disappointing we have not been able to convert that dominance into wins.

"However, we have won three on the bounce, so hopefully we can make it four on Sunday.

"Stepping up a division from Kendal, the pace is the main difference, everything is done so much more quickly and you have got to be sharp physically and mentally. "Defensively it is a big ask to shut teams out, especially with past Premiership players dropping down at the tail end of their careers."

In fine fettle with just one defeat at the hands of runaway leaders Esher since the turn of the year, Tynedale go into the game much the happier with form, if not results. However, the Corbridge men have already thrown that particular book out of the window in the week's preparations, revealed rugby chairman John Shotton.

Shotton said: "What has happened before means nothing once this game kicks off, everyone knows that.

"We have treated this week like any other and tried not to allow the earlier clash this season to colour our preparation.

"With any luck things will be very different this time around, given we have had a lot of players return to form and fitness."

Mourinho happiest in the role

Byline: DES KELLY

replica tag heruer watches

DES KELLY in Milan finds the Mourinho ego undiminished by Inter's failure to beat Sampdoria in his last match before he faces his former club Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday JOSE Mourinho and Chelsea have very few surprises in store for one another this week, but the Inter Milan manager still served up a timely reminder of just how difficult he can be.

Wherever he is in charge, whatever the odds, Mourinho always moulds a team who are notoriously tough to overcome. Two red cards reduced Inter Milan to nine men for nearly an hour of a petulant encounter with Sampdoria. With a familiar theatrical flourish, Mourinho was so incensed he gestured to the crowd that the decisions of the referee had slapped him in handcuffs.

But it was depleted Inter that put the game under lock and key as a lesson in bloody-minded obstinacy and tactical awareness, which earned them a goalless draw and edged Mourinho closer to his second successive Serie A crown.

'How do I feel? I feel proud,' said Mourinho later. 'This was good for morale and good for team spirit. It's eight years now without a defeat at home in domestic competitions, championships and cups. To celebrate the anniversary with this match, in these circumstances, and for our team spirit to survive the way it did is great.' The result preserved Mourinho's impressive record of never having lost a home game since 2002, a sequence that stretches back through his time with Porto, Chelsea and now Internazionale. Those impressive statistics are a measure of the task facing Carlo Ancelotti and Chelsea in the San Siro on Wednesday night.

'To lose here in the Italian game, we would need to be left with six players on the field,' said Mourinho, not even bothering to conceal his scorn for his Serie A rivals. 'I said the same thing when we beat AC Milan with nine men and I'm saying it again now. But we won't beat Chelsea with nine players.' Mourinho does, however, perceive a resolve and sense of purpose at Inter that could give him the edge over the Premier League leaders.

'In England it is never easy, you can lose any game, but when a team is always strong, strong, strong,' he repeated for emphasis, 'then it doesn't lose many matches or so many points.' Mourinho may have been mak-ing an oblique reference to the four away defeats Chelsea have already suffered under Ancelotti, no doubt recalling how he lost just once on the way to the first of his replica hublot watches two league titles at Stamford Bridge.

But although the result on Saturday night was a psychological boost for Inter, the strain of playing for 53 minutes with nine men was far from the ideal preparation Mourinho would have wanted.

'My players feel very tired, very tired,' he admitted. 'Samuel Eto'o was running miles and miles for one-and-a-half hours on his own up front.' As a football spectacle it was a dismal affair. As a pantomime, it had much more to commend it. Players from both sides spent the majority of the match fouling one another or rolling around in mock agony.

Inter's Argentine defender Walter Samuel was shown a red card for elbowing Nicola Pozzi in the face as he closed on goal. Central defender Ivan Cordoba was dismissed for two bookable offences, before Sampdoria's Giampaolo Pazzini was sent packing by the referee midway through the second half.

Italy now waits to see if Mourinho can translate his domestic dominance into Inter's first European Cup triumph for 45 long years. Never mi

Mixed results for young basket

MACKAY'S under 18 basketballers sweated it out in the first Top of the North challenge at Candlestick Park at the weekend.

With courtside temperatures in the high 30s, the men's team played five matches and the women four against Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns rivals in the battle for North Queensland rankings ahead of the State Classics in Brisbane in May.

On Saturday the men's team beat Townsville by 14 and Rockhampton by 20, before losing to Cairns by 16 in a night match.

Yesterday it had a comprehensive win over second division Mulgrave before losing to Townsville by 10.

"Overall it was a very pleasing weekend. The boys competed very, very well," coach Russell Leeson said.

"I think there is a lot of improvement in this team.

"They had to play in oppressive heat and it was muggy even for the later games."

Standouts included state under 18 reps Brady Rutland, the team's top scorer, Hayden Wicks and Brendon Shepherd, while Ryan Di- Filippo was outstanding off the bench in rebounding and scoring.

Cairns finished the weekend undefeated, with Mackay second and Townsville third.

The women's team had one win during the weekend, against the Mackay under 16s yesterday, after losing to Cairns, Rockhampton and Townsville on Saturday.

But coach Amarlie Carroll took plenty of positives out of the weekend, the first of three Top of the North carnivals. The others are to be played at Townsville and Cairns next month.

"We had to go into the match without one of our top players, Rachel McKenzie, who was hurt in training a few weeks ago, but we hope to have her back for the Classics," Carroll said.

"Jessica Healy and Darci Cousins both played well and Winnie Cook, who has played top age basketball in Brisbane, is showing a lot of promise.

"There was a benchmark here for where we're at, and we'll be playing Townsville, Cairns and Rocky again next month and looking for revenge."

Mackay's women's team has improved to fifth in the State Classics from sixth the previous year, and Carroll said she was confident they could maintain their ranking.

"We're playing teams from Brisbane, who get top opposition just about every week, while we get just three opportunities to play in carnivals like these," Carroll said.

Mountaineers out to banish 200

TOOWOOMBA Mountaineers men are optimistic about the upcoming QBL season as an influx of new players helps them put last year's win- less campaign behind them.

The Mountaineers men and women had the dubious honour of failing to win a game from 36 attempts last season, making 2009 a forgettable year.

But 2010 is looking more promising as coach Torben Marcussen has welcomed having 35 players try-out for the Mountaineers men.

"We're doing quite well this year. We've been going for about eight weeks now replica tag heruer watches and we've had quite a bigger turn-out this year for tryouts," he said.

Marcussen is happy to see Trevor Grieve come out of retirement, but he is most excited about replica hublot watches the addition of big man Steven Kluck.

"There is a lot of new faces this year," Marcussen said.

"The main one is Steven Kluck, he's about 6'10 and he's a local boy. He's been around Toowoomba for many years but he hasn't been able to make a commitment.

"I've been in Toowoomba for 25 years and he's probably the most potentially gifted player I've seen in Toowoomba."

The Mountaineers men have trimmed their squad from the 35 who initially trialled and the remaining hopefuls will be keen to impress this weekend when the squad travels to Coffs Harbour and Ballina for trials.

A few players are still to be omitted from the squad before Toowoomba's round one fixture against Ipswich on April 24.

The Mountaineers will play NSW State League side Coffs Harbour on Saturday before taking on Ballina on Sunday.
