From staff and wire reports
SAN DIEGO - A solid start wasn't nearly enough for the University of Wyoming men's basketball team.
True freshman forward Kawhi Leonard scored a career-high 26 points, and San Diego State led by as many as 37 late in the contest to hand UW an 88-57 loss Wednesday night at Viejas Swiss Watches Arena.
UW (9-15 overall, 2-8 Mountain West Conference) suffered its most lopsided loss of the season. The Cowboys have lost four consecutive games, seven of their last eight and fell to 0-8 on the road.
San Diego State improved to 17-7, 6-4. The 31-point win matched its most decisive victory in MWC history.
UW led by as many as six points in the first half, and led 27-23 with six minutes, 55 seconds to play in the half.
San Diego State went on a 16-4 run to close the half and led 39- 31 at halftime.
The Aztecs then started the second half with a 10-3 run and steadily built their lead.
San Diego State scored 30 points off 20 UW turnovers.
Junior forward Djibril Thiam led UW with 15 points. True freshman guard Desmar Jackson added 14, but 11 came in the first half. He fouled out about midway through the second half, along with sophomore point guard JayDee Luster.
Leonard's previous career-high came against UW back on Jan. 9 when he had 25 points.
Fendi Bags Freshman guard Chase Tapley added 14 points for the Aztecs.
True freshman forward Daylen Harrison started in place of sophomore guard Arthur Bouedo to give UW more size against San Diego State's front court.
But that didn't help much as San Diego State outrebounded UW 43- 28, including 17-11 on the offensive glass. The Aztecs outscored the Cowboys 46-28 in the paint.
UW hosts TCU (11-14, 3-7) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Arena- Auditorium in Laramie. TCU lost at home to Utah 64-55 Wednesday night and is in seventh place in the MWC. UW is in eighth place.
