Two separate attacks on women by street robbers occurred in a matter of hours in Leigh.

One of the victims was dragged to the ground by a man as he wrenched her handbag from her grasp.

A second woman was attacked as she left a social club, but managed to cling onto her bag.

The incidents happened just hours apart and on both occasions the women were attacked from behind.

But the crimes are not being linked by police and officers believe they are looking for two offenders.

One victim, a 49-year-old woman was robbed as she walked with a friend in St Helens Road, Leigh, at about 12.20am on Saturday (March 4). The pair, who were heading for JR Taxis, were on the bridge which leads towards East Bridgewater Street when the woman felt a sharp tug on the strap of her handbag and turned to be confronted by a robber.

The thug pulled her bag from her shoulder and tried to wrench it from her grasp, but she refused to let go and was dragged to the ground.

The woman was eventually forced to let go and the robber sprinted off towards Pennington Park with her bag which contained a purse and her [pounds sterling]100 silver Nokia 6610 mobile phone.

A man who had witnessed the robbery chased the offender.

As the have-a-go hero gained on the robber, the crook turned and threw the stolen bag at him.

He then ran off with the woman's mobile phone which he had already

An attempted robbery happened just hours earlier at around 9pm on Friday (March 3).

A 33-year-old woman was leaving St Paul's Sports and Social Club in Heather Grove, Leigh, when she was attacked from behind by an offender who grabbed her handbag.

After a struggle the handbag strap snapped and the would-be robber ran off empty-handed.

He was white,16-18 years old and was wearing dark, casual clothing. He is believed to have been with two other youths, one of whom was riding a bicycle.

Anyone who has any information about either incident is asked to contact Leigh Police on 0161 856 7046 or to call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

A third sister, Sharon Mulcahy, said Caroline, 38, and Anne- Marie, 25, were threatened with "two massive stones".

"It is the older people I am worried about - I see them myself every day going up there with their handbags." Earlier this week, councillor Maria Byrne called for CCTV and improved lighting at the cemetery to prevent car theft, vandalism and drinking.

The Stevenson family have visited their mother Ann's grave every day since she died last Christmas Day.

Police searching for CCTV pair

POLICE are appealing for help to identify two people who stole a woman's purse.

The theft was caught on CCTV camera at the Somerfield store in West Street, Stamford.

A man and a woman are seen entering the shop and walking around before taking the victim's purse from her bag.

The footage also shows them looking at the contents of the purse in the next aisle.

Although the victim did not see Other Brands Jewellery the theft take place she noticed when she went to pay that her purse was missing and immediately cancelled her credit and debit cards.

Police want to remind shoppers, particularly women who carry handbags, never to leave them unattended.

Officers said it is easy to become distracted for a few seconds while picking items from the shelves and it gives thieves enough time to take a purse or entire handbag.

Police seeking attack witness

DO you recognise this man who police believe witnessed a late-night street robbery in Preston city centre.

Detectives want to speak to him in connection with the attack that saw a woman in her 30s have her handbag ripped from her grasp on Fishergate.

DC Greg Anderton, from Preston CID, said: "We believe the man pictured saw what happened and we are keen to find out who he is.

Offender

"He is not implicated criminally, we are happy to speak to him purely as a witness. We just want to hear what he knows.

"The CCTV footage is good quality and there must be someone who recognises him."

He said the man pictured would have seen an offender approach two Preston women in their 30s on Fishergate, near the junction with Corporation Street.

The robber grabbed one of their handbags and pulled it with such force it snapped the strap.

Both women were unharmed and the offender, a man in his 20s, ran off. The other man, captured by CCTV cameras earlier on the night of the offence, then spoke to the women but left before police arrived.

Fashion Set

The man pictured is in his early to mid-20s and he was wearing a white sweater and blue jeans.

The robbery happened at around 2am on Sunday, February 26.

Earlier this year the Lancashire Evening Post reported how robberies in Preston had increased to one a day with hotspots including the city centre and Broadgate.

But last month, robbery rates had fallen to around one every other day in the city.

Teenage Mugger Preyed On Old

A TEENAGE robber who was branded a "danger to the vulnerable" was caged for three years yesterday.

The young thug, who cannot be named, targeted women in their 80s, and launched brutal street attacks as they went about their daily routines in Jarrow and Hebburn.

Newcastle Crown Court heard after leaving his victims battered and bleeding, the boy, who was only 13 at the time, spent the money he stole on trips to Wet 'n' Wild and MetroLand.

One 81-year-old victim was kicked in the face as she made her way to collect her prescription.

Another was knocked to the ground during a struggle to get her handbag and its [pounds sterling]80 contents, and a third woman was repeatedly punched in the head as she collected her winnings - just [pounds sterling]6 - from her local betting shop.

Judge Beatrice Bolton told the boy, now 14: "This tells me you do not understand the effects of what you have done because you would not have done it if you did.

"It also tells me at this precise moment in time you are a danger to the vulnerable in our society.

"If you want something Replica Monogram Watercolor for yourself you will pick on those least likely to fight with you in order to get it - the most vulnerable, the elderly.

"I therefore have to protect the vulnerable in our society, those people you might attack, from you.

"It may be it is not too late to do work with you, so when you are released you come out and you are a different lad, a lad who does understand what it is to be as selfish as you were, and what it is to kick and beat people for money."

The boy, from Hebburn, was detained at Her Majesty's Pleasure for three years. He remained expressionless as he was led away by members of the youth offending team.

He pleaded guilty to three robberies on May 25, June 1 and June 7, and asked for two similar offences to be taken into account.
