IN the days before golf became a global mega-business dominated by manufacturers like Titleist, Callaway and Ping, amateur players would turn to their local professional to make them a new set of clubs.

Men like Ken Milner who was the club professional at Bulwell Forest through the 1950s and '60s and who was featured in the Guardian Journal's series Other Man's Job more than 30 years ago.

But, even back in 1967, Ken was aware of the growing threat to his craft from the spread of the game.

"Amateur players see so much on television, they all want clubs with a top flight player's name on them, not handmade at their local club", he said.

Ken learned his trade the traditional way, as an assistant at various clubs, finally working for George Johnson, who was the pro at Bulwell and Sherwood Forest.

"There were few tournaments in those days and the professional regarded club-making as a challenge. It was an art to him", said Ken.

"Clubs used to be made up from rough wood blocks in those days and I spent endless hours at the work bench. We had a wide range of clubs and often made them to the individual's requirements and physical build."

It is a far cry from Clip on charms the golf stores of today where racks of clubs are waiting to be chosen 'off the peg'.

Ken's son Victor had followed him into the game, working as assistant to Maurice Youngs at Wollaton Park.

His father said: "They must have golf in their blood otherwise they would never take the job. The financial attractions in industry are much greater."

But he added: "One of the compensations for the long hours I put in, compared with the five-day men in industry, is that I have made hundreds of good friends.

"I have played with miners and company directors, local councillors and MPs. To be a successful professional and a popular one you have to be a good mixer."
