PANAJI: Goa university vice chancellor, Dileep Deobaghkar, highlighted the importance of education in shaping character, at a function on Saturday at Dona Paula where the Ashiyana Gyan Jyoti Purashkar was awarded to 60 meritorious students from Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra who hail from poor financial backgrounds.

The amount covers all expenses incurred on admission fees, tuition fees, books, reference books, uniforms, shoes etc. The total number of students under the Ashiyana Gyan Jyoti Purashkar scheme is now 126.

Emphasizing that education was an opportunity, he encouraged the students who received the scholarships to develop their talents to the best of their abilities. He also said that education to Indian youth was an opportunity to prove that India was resilient and anything and everything can be achieved.
The Ashiyana trust was established in 2007, with a primary focus on improving the lives of underprivileged
